No, actually. For example, the ones from Carl Sagan and Benjamin Franklin were specific towards specific religious groups, or religious extremists, not religion as a whole. Taking them out of that context in this form makes it appear as though those individuals were speaking against religion in its entirety.
Also, could you refrain from pointless insults? To the best of my knowledge, none of what I said was engineered to be insulting.
I'm a Christian, but hear me out: I AM NOT TALKING BAD ABOUT ATHIESTS! All I'm goign to say is, I think the most reason people don't believe in God is because they haven't experienced any of the miracles he has given.
Define miracle in such a way that rules out any other influence, including blind chance and the agency of other beings and then demonstrate or show examples of those "miracles" in a scientifically testable way and we'll have a conversation. What most people call miracles are just what happens when you have vastly complex system interacting with itself in complicated ways.
I didn't know what else to call them. I'm legitly stupid, so I have no idea what you just said, but I respect you for being so smart. I respect your beliefs and everyone else's, but I guess I could call 'miracles' more like 'answered prayers'.
What hes saying is, say when you pray to God, to say cure you cancer, with a survival rate of 1 out of 49 cases. And you survive it, that is not a miracle, because 48 other people just ended up dead. If one child is found alive in a collapsed building, thats not a miracle, because the other children in the building are found dead. Every miracle that is still viewed as a miracle today, is source of chance. People used to think the weather and rainbows were miracles, until we proved they are products of global systems of current and logic and rainbows is water in the air refracting light. Any "miracle" can be explained. Surviving is a possiblity, not a higher being answering a prayer.
So your idea of proof of a higher being, that you can't explain, is you have these miracles... that you can't explain. That is the main reason, atheist, are well atheist, the only account of any higher powers being seen that is beleived by an entire group, are in holy books. In these books, God appears in these huge unmissable forms that prove himself great. Yet, in a day and time when any such event can be explained by science and seen thatday by millions, due to mass media, "God" has never appeared. If a man today, were to wipe out a whole city of people. He would be a disgusting war criminal. if he said it was in the name of "God", people would call him misguided and not understanding what God is. But when it happens in the bible, which it does many times. It is seen as the will of a just God, because those people were evil, for not believing in a God willing to massacre babies. If a God exists, he is either the most sadistic being on earth, creating and punishing people to the worst tortures imaginable. I'm not insulting you for believing in such a being, but I find it strange you'll believe it simply because it was taught to you by someone that learnt it someone else that learnt it someone else that learnt it someone else and some on and so and such. Well things like science constantly and gladly change and will always accept new ideas and theories, because it is the only reason the internet was ever invented. Not because God made it in 6 days and said it was good. But because someone that wanted to break the mold of existance, followed logic and reasoning, to make something that is greater then anything "Jesus" ever predicted.
I see your point, but also it's just this whole universe. I don't believe that it just came to be. It's so advanced and everything works out just so perfect and percise that only a being like God coould of created it. I respect you and your beliefs, but I think the universe it too complicated to just have been created by a big bang.
Thats why there Deist [link] It holds the ideal that it makes no sense that any book written by creatures that can't even reach nearby planets, could somehow understand a being capable of creating something so huge, we are smaller then atoms even if it was half its size. Do you think people in a time where only people who spent there entire life learning, could read and write anything that could be viewed as the undoubtable word of a being greater then anything ever. I don't believe in Deism, but trust me, it is a great thing to follow, since it avoids all the hate and violence caused by organized religions.
Do you want to make your own right and wrong? Or listen to texts written in a time where it was okay to rape women if you payed for it later and forced them to marry you, or have them killed?
How wonderful! Thank you for this, it's lovely. Although I must say, having been a militant atheist myself at one time, replacing the "Atheist" in the center with another quote would seem more poignant. Or maybe I'm still scared. Either way, this is going on my desktop.
I couldn't agree more with all the quotes especially the one by George Bernard Shaw. My own personal philosophy is mostly based on Nietzsche work 'The Death of God'. But frankly as long as one believes in God as a guide line through life I see no problem in it. Okay, so I admit that it freaks me out when I read or hear people talking about the LORD, but there are tons of people on this planet and they are all different. Actually the only way to get along is to respect the other even if they may not agree with us... as long as they respect us in return.
Of course it's whole different story if someone decides to use violence/force on us just because we do not agree (aka flying into fucking buildings) then I would switch to their language and return the favor...
I think many of these quotes are merely attacking the religious institution itself, or at least that kind of fanatic faith. I agree with both of them, but tend to dislike atheists, even if not as much as theists. I simply think it is not rational, one cannot know wether there is a god and that's it.
You have a poor understanding of what an atheist is. A person can lack positive belief in a god and accept that they are unable to disprove the existence of all gods. If you care to debate this (as many other commenters on my images here have before you) please wiki atheism and agnosticism beforehand (and read the articles) so that the whole she-bang can be avoided.
